Prepare Properly If You Want to Write a Good Resume

Decide if you will be creating your own electronic copy or if you will have someone else use a computer to create it. If you are going to do it yourself you will need a computer program that has a resume template capability or some good word processing and typing skills.

If someone else is going to put it together you will still need to prepare a paper copy to give to them so they can create the electronic copy.

Gather everything you need to put your nursing resume together. You can work with pen and paper or on a computer whatever you are comfortable with.

Prepare to write your nursing resume by reading all the information on this website. Start with how to make a resume and follow any of the links until you understand the various parts of the resume and what the format for an outline of a resume really is.

Gather all the equipment and information you need to get started. Make sure you have:

  • a dictionary and thesaurus.
  • recent nursing job descriptions for previous nursing employment.
  • addresses of employers and schools you have attended and dates.
  • copies of your certificates of any post graduate training or education programs you have attended.

Writing the Resume

  1. Start with writing the caption. This is the part of the resume that offers your name and contact information.

Include your first and last name only and do not include any references to your marital status by using titles such as Miss, Ms, or Mrs.

You will not write the good resume you desire if there are errors, so make sure this information is accurate.

It is absolutely essential that your potential employer can contact you easily. If they try once or twice and are unable to contact you, your nursing resume will go to the bottom of the pile or be filed away and not looked at again.

  2. Create your resume objective statement. You can follow the formula offered for the resume objective samples or use one from these examples.

Writing a resume objective sentence is not necessary if you are just starting out in your nursing career and do not have any nursing experience.

  3. Create your list of qualifications under the heading Qualifications Summary.

Only include a qualifications summary on your resume if you have a list of specific qualifications that you can showcase.

You do not need this section if you are not an experienced nurse. You can still write a good resume if you leave this section out, so don't worry that omitting it will jeopardize your chances of getting a job.

  4. Here is some formatting help with writing a resume and some examples of how to structure this information.
  5. Create the headings for the information section and fill in the necessary information.

The two mandatory headings in this section are:

    • Professional Experience
    • Education

Usually the work experience section is placed first but if you are a new graduate and have no previous nursing experience then put the education information section first.

There is no exact way that this should be formatted just be consistent and use the same format throughout. This makes it easier for the human reader.

  6. References - After the information section you should have a heading called References. Under this heading simply write "References available on request."

See these tips for resume references.

You have now completed your nursing resume. It is time to get it typed up and formatted. Then you can start submitting it in application for nursing jobs in Canada.
