Annual Salary Range for Registered Nursing Jobs in Canada

Province
step One
Top of scale
Quebec $38,927 $57,984
Ontario $52,260 $75,543

These registered nurse salaries are what the nurse would make in a position providing care directly to the patient. This may be at the bedside, in a residential care facility, or in the patient's own home.

The lower number is the nurse salary at the entry level of experience and the higher number reflects the salary at the top of the payscale.

You can view the registered nurse salary payscale for nursing jobs in Canada on the websites of the various labour unions that represent nurses in the 13 provinces and territories.

Collective agreements on those union websites will provide details for each individual province and the wage payscale for nurses in that province.

www.registered-nurse-canada.com has summarized salary information in tabular format on the following pages:
Nursing as a career can involve other duties and responsibilities besides direct patient care. This includes supervision, clinical teaching, or administration.

These union included positions would be paid at the appropriate payscale that reflects the level of responsibility, decision-making and education required to perform the job. The nurse would be advanced to the next step of the salary payscale with each year of experience.

Other positions in a more advanced nursing career in Canada may be union excluded in which case salary would be negotiated within the parameters of any existing provincial guidelines.

Of course some nurses do not belong to nursing unions in which case the salary information would only be available on the specific union site representing those workers such as:

  • nursing faculty at university, colleges, and institutions
  • federal employees
  • provincial government employees

More Salary Information

Dollars per hour or annual salary amounts do not provide the whole picture of what nurses are paid in Canada. Because of the efforts of labour unions nurses enjoy a wide variety of benefits that may not show up on the paycheque but nevertheless have real monetary value.

These benefits include:
  • a pension plan - some money is deducted every month and contributed to a pension plan. Additional money is contributed to the pension account by the employer on behalf of the employee.

  • paid sick time - sick time is accrued on an annual basis at a rate that ranges from 1 to 1 1/2 days per month. As long you have unpaid sick time, when work is missed due to illness you receive regular pay and benefits for that day.

  • paid statutory holidays - If you work on a statutory holiday, the pay for work that day would be paid out at the rate specified in the union contract. This is usually time and a half or double time for some holidays such a Christmas or New Year's Day. Additionally you would receive a day off with pay, so in fact you would actually be paid anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 times the hourly rate for working on a statutory holiday.

  • paid vacation - vacation benefits for nursing jobs in Canada are paid days. Union contracts specify anywhere from 15 - 20 days for the first year of vacation. More days accrue with every year of work. As an example a registered nurse with ten years experience would receive 26 days of vacation in British Columbia , in Saskatchewan that would be 15 days and in Manitoba 20 days. It is obvious then that some variation does exist in paid vacation days between provinces.

  • life insurance policy - many unions negotiate for life insurance benefits to be paid by the employer. The life insurance policy is in effect as long as the individual is employed.

  • medical insurance premiums paid by the employer
