Some resume words can be helpful on your nursing resume. Other words may hinder your application for nursing jobs in Canada.


You want to write a good resume. Words that are carefully chosen can help you to be specific and detail what you have done in your nursing career.


Your Nursing Resume - Words You Might Want to Avoid

Using words like "responsible for" or "provided care for" are not specific and do not tell the employer much of anything. Be realistic. Anybody applying for nursing jobs in Canada would be responsible for providing nursing care.

That is a not something that is special or sets you apart from other applicants for the nursing jobs in Canada. Any employer in health care in Canada would expect a nurse to be responsible for nursing care.

Instead of these resume words Use these resume words...
Provided nursing care to patients in a long term care facility. Proficient in the use of wound care products for both infected and non infected wounds in the elderly population.
Responsible for nursing care of pre and post-op patients. Planned, implemented and evaluated care for a range of clients from 14 to 90 years of age who required surgery for a variety of health challenges that required surgical intervention to the thoracic, head and neck, and abdominal regions.
Worked in a pediatric unit providing nursing care to children with infectious illnesses. Implemented a variety of isolation precautions with children and families including respiratory, enteric and blood and body fluid precautions for a variety of infectious illness such as acute gastroenteritis, MRSA, and respiratory syncytial virus, while promoting family centered care.

If you were the person in charge of reviewing nursing resumes which words in the above statements would catch your attention? Which ones tell you the most about the potential employee? The statements on the left or the right?

You want to use words on your resume that catch the attention of the person scanning the resume and you only have about 15 seconds to do this. Research shows that most resumes are given only about 15 seconds of attention before a decision is made about further action.

You want the next action to be a phone call or an email inviting you to an job interview so make sure to use words on your resume are specific in describing your skills and abilities and that they will catch the attention of the person scanning the resume.


Here is a list of some words that you might want to use on your nursing resume. You can use them to write a resume objective statement or to create your qualifications summary on your registered nurse resume.

If English is not your first language and you choose to use any of these words make sure that you know exactly what they mean and get someone to look over your resume before you submit it. Your nursing resume presents a first impression to the employer and your English language skills will be judged to be inadequate if your nursing resume shows poor use of the English language.
