Regulatory Nursing Organizations
for Registered Nursing
in Canada

Nursing organizations that regulate registered nursing in Canada are called either a "college" or an "association" depending on the provincial nursing laws which define the structure, the name, and the mandate of the regulating body.

This list is for the regulatory authorities in each province for registered nursing. In many provinces a licensed practical nurse or a registered psychiatric nurse is licensed under a separate college or association.

What is the difference between the regulatory body for the nursing profession and the nursing labor union?

The labor union acts in the interest of its members, the nurses.

The regulatory nursing organization acts in the interest of the public.

From time to time, and under certain conditions these interests conflict so one authority cannot represent the interests of both parties.

All provincial nursing education programs prepare nurses to write the same nursing entrance test based on the national set of entry level competencies. Even though there might be some variation in the nature of nurses work from province to province there should be more similarity than disparity across the country.
