Licensed Practical Nurse
Salary in Canada

The following licensed practical nurse salary information was taken from the latest contract comparison of pay scale compiled by Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions.

The data is current up to 2010 and reveals that LPN jobs do not enjoy the same level of remuneration as do registered nurse jobs. This is reflection of the lower level of responsibility, decision-making within the LPN nursing scope of practice.

Also licensed practical nurse education does not lead to a university degree.

Of additional interest is the fact that there are fewer steps on the salary pay scale for a licensed practical nurse.

Not all LPN jobs are represented by nursing labor unions. In some provinces a licensed practical nurse is a member of a labor union other than a nursing union and in other provinces LPN jobs may be unionized under more than one union depending on where the job is located.

In Saskatchewan there are two different unions representing LPN jobs (CUPE Canadian Union of Public Employees and SEIU- Service Employees International Union). The same is true in Alberta. In British Columbia the licensed practical nurse is a member of the Health Employees Union. This union negotiates for a large number of health care employees who work in support positions in health care such as administrative and clerical support workers, finance workers, carpenters, maintenance, and food service workers to name but a few.

As with most union contracts the expression of the licensed practical nurse salary is in dollars per hour. The annual salary can be calculated using the number of hours per year.

As with most labor union jobs in health care, LPN jobs also have benefits as part of the union contract which would include pension, vacation, sick time, and other provisions that would be similar but not exactly like those paid to a registered nurse.

Current Nursing Shortage

Some provincial health authorities have decreased the number of nursing positions because of funding shortfalls. These are some of the political nuances of nursing in Canada.

The various career sections on health authority websites still show a wide variety of positions, but many of them are not entry level.

This is most likely a temporary situation and all predictions still forcast a nursing shortage for the future.

I will be monitoring this situation over the longer term.

Bev:

I have read the pages on your site, and just thought you should know, that so far your website has been the most valuable information tool I have found. It is really hard to find the right information. I have just enrolled in a diploma program, RPN, and then I would like to follow through and get my degree.

Thank you again for your time, and for the great site, I am certainly going to pass it along.
