Current Nursing Shortage
Are There Any Entry Level Nursing Jobs in Canada?

Updates on the current nursing shortage in the Canadian health care system. Entry level nursing jobs seem to be in short supply in some provinces.

But there are still nursing jobs in Canada if you examine the health care job site of each province.

In the Canadian health care system provincial health authorities administer the health care budget.

Unfortunately the number of nursing jobs at any one time may be affected by funding as influenced by provincial politics, world economics, and the collective bargaining process of the nursing labor unions.

These are just some of the political nuances of nursing in Canada.

Canada has been weathering the economic crisis of late 2008 and early 2009 very well but it is not totally unaffected. There have been significant job losses and two of the big automakers employing some 20,000 people were given big taxpayer bail outs in order to keep people working.

Thankfully the banking system is one of the best (if not the best in the world so things are OK there.)

Governments respond to fiscal crisis by cutting spending. Social and health programs have been affected leading some to say there is no current nursing shortage in Canada at all.

Take a closer look at the current nursing shortage projections and the supply and demand forces that affect the nursing labor market.

All predictions are still for a shortage in the nursing labor market as the supply cannot keep up with the escalating demand for projected for the future.

Of course one of the best ways to make a nursing shortage go away is simply to eliminate nursing jobs! and magically we have enough nurses for all the nursing jobs in Canada.

Of course this has not happened across the nation, because it is provincial governments that administer health care in Canada. Some provinces have stopped hiring altogether and other areas still need nurses for vacant positions.

The positions that are available, however, may not be entry level nursing jobs.

The various provincial health care job sites of the 13 provincial and territorial governments still show a wide variety of nursing jobs in Canada. On close examination however, they are not entry level nursing jobs. This is likely to create a situation where new graduates are saying "There are no nursing jobs in Canada."

It is complicated. There is no doubt that the number of nursing jobs has declined as provincial governments have adopted a "wait and see attitude" instead of filling vacant nursing jobs immediately.

However, this is most likely a temporary situation. All forecasts are still for an acute nursing shortage in the long term, and all predictions still forecast a nursing shortage for the future.

Certainly, once the nurses already in the system fill all the positions that are posted, then entry level nursing jobs will become available.

I will be monitoring the current nursing shortage in Canada over the longer term with blog posts here on this page.
