Current Nursing Shortage in Newfoundland and Labrador

Dec 2, 2010

The current nursing shortage in Newfoundland and Labrador is not really current it is ongoing.

Cuts to services have been going on since the 1990's when many nurses started leaving for greener western pastures.

At that time the low wages were being cited as the reason why many nurses were leaving the province. However, an examination of the nurse salary payscale across the country shows that registered nurses in this eastern island and coastal province are not the lowest paid in the country any more.

The Newfoundland Labrador Nurses Union won some improvements in the last round of bargaining that saw an improvement to the salary scale including the complete elimination of the bottom two steps of the payscale so starting salary is now higher for nurses in Newfoundland Labrador.

In March of 2009 one health region reported many surgical cancellations and service cuts because of the current nursing shortage.

As recently as Feb 2010 one health region reports that the nursing shortage in that region has resulted in bed closures.

The current nursing shortage in Newfoundland is so acute that the provincial government in recruiting from other countries. This news story profiles the hiring of 17 registered nurses from India.

It would be helpful if you would indicate what type of help you are looking for.

How do you expect www.registered-nurse-canada.com or someone on this forum to help you? If you could provide those details we might be able to lend assistance.

Just going by what others have written here it sounds like this requirement for 400 hrs of employment in advance of writing the CRNE is a real barrier to finalizing registration.

Perhaps there is no longer a nursing shortage in Newfoundland?

I will advise you as I have advised others to go elsewhere in Canada where there is no such requirement.

Nursing Jobs in Canada - Newfoundland and Labrador
by: Bev

I have been in touch with the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador and asked them to contribute to this forum but so far no comments have arrived.
The requirement for the 400 hours of work has been confirmed as a requirement to be completed before you can write the CRNE.

As this requirement is unique to Newfoundland/Labrador have you considered applying to other provinces ?

Are you aware of how small this province is?
They serve a very small population base in Canada.

You may be better advised to seek registration in another province first. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta ,and BC are all hiring at the moment although some of them will require the SEC assessment.
You can apply directly to the provincial regulatory authority through the links on the Nursing Organizations in Canada page.

Reply to Bev question
by: Bini Emmanuel

Thanks Bev for your response to my issue. You asked if the Nursing Council will allow you take the CRNE exams without the 400 hrs working reference. The truth is, it is stated that the 400 hrs is one of the requirement needed b4 you can enroll the exams so without a job offer you can proceed with your full registration. I will be glad if some one can help me get a job offer in Newfoundland and Labrador

Nursing Jobs for Internationally Educated Nurses in Newfoundland and Labrador
by: Bev

It looks like the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador has put some changes in place since April 2010 that includes an employment reference.

It sounds like from what you have said that this employment has to be in nursing?

But you do have permission to take the CRNE?

Perhaps you could let us know what the association has said to you about this and may be as you indicated there is someone on this forum that will help out.

Getting a job offer in Newfoundland and Labrador
by: Bini Emmanuel

As a registered nurse who has gotten his paper assessed and an approval letter to get a job offer where he can work to acquire the 400hrs needed to be eligible to write the CRNE exams already sent. What advice can you give to facilitate the search for a job offer. Because from the look of things, it seems to be the end of the road for me as all efforts to get a job offer since October 8th when the approval letter was sent has proved abortive. Please let someone who knows what I should do come to my rescue.
