Career Objective Examples for Resumes
for Nursing Jobs in Canada

Here are some career objective examples for resumes that you can consider if you want to apply for nursing jobs in Canada in pediatrics, long term care, psychiatric nursing, palliative care, and community health nursing.

These resume objectives statements all refer to registered nurse jobs but they could be altered for a licensed practical nurse or a registered psychiatric nurse just by changing the wording.

Entry Level Nurse Employment

If you have just graduated and are now applying for nursing jobs in Canada it is not necessary to put an objective statement in your resume. However, if you feel you must add one to make your resume complete here are some sample resume objectives you can start with.

Career Objective Examples for Resumes for Entry Level Positions

To obtain a position as a registered nurse in an acute or sub-acute setting where I can apply my nursing knowledge and skills and continue to develop as a professional nurse.
To secure nursing employment in an organization where I can continue to learn new technical nursing competencies and develop professionally as a registered nurse.

Pediatrics

You will notice that this resume objective statement emphasizes family advocacy as this is an important concept in pediatric nursing.

To achieve a position as a registered nurse in a pediatric hospital where I can use my well developed communication skills for family advocacy and collaborative practice.

Psychiatric or Mental Health Nursing

In this resume objective statement you will notice that advocacy is emphasized again along with communication skills which are an essential nursing competency in mental health nursing.

To achieve a position as a registered nurse in an acute psychiatric setting where I can use my well developed communication skills for patient treatment, patient advocacy, and collaborative practice in the field of mental health nursing.

Career Objective Examples for Resumes
Long Term Care and Acute Care

Here are two sample resume objectives one for acute care and one for long term care. You will notice that the long term care statement refers to leadership because nurses in long term care fulfill leadership positions. The one for acute care emphasizes a dynamic environment and collaborative practice.

To obtain a leadership position as a registered nurse in a long term care setting where I can continue to expand my knowledge of gerontology and dementia care in an environment of collaboration and team work.
To secure a position as a registered nurse in a dynamic and challenging acute care setting where I can continue to develop my skills in patient advocacy and collaborative practice.

Palliative Care

To secure a position as a registered nurse in a palliative care unit where I can continue to develop and apply my expertise in pain management and support of the client and family who are facing end of life issues.

Community Health

To obtain a position as a community health nurse where I can continue to apply my knowledge of epidemiology and community health nursing in a collaborative community focused team environment.

If you plan to use any of these career objective examples for resumes in application for nursing jobs in Canada you should be able to speak to the meaning of any of the terms that are used.

It is extremely important that you are able to clearly explain the meaning of anything that you have put in your resume so be prepared to explain to the employer what you think "collaborative practice" is or what team work means if they ask you that during your job interview.

It should not be on your resume if you cannot explain it, defend it, or prove it to be true!

Current Nursing Shortage

Some provincial health authorities have decreased the number of nursing positions because of funding shortfalls. These are some of the political nuances of nursing in Canada.

The various career sections on health authority websites still show a wide variety of positions, but many of them are not entry level.

This is most likely a temporary situation and all predictions still forcast a nursing shortage for the future.

I will be monitoring this situation over the longer term.

I have read the pages on your site, and just thought you should know, that so far your website has been the most valuable information tool I have found. It is really hard to find the right information. I have just enrolled in a diploma program, RPN, and then I would like to follow through and get my degree.

Thank you again for your time, and for the great site, I am certainly going to pass it along.
