Becoming a nurse was always my dream and a nursing career in education was always in my plans.
I was able to make my dream of being a member of the nursing profession come true and you can too.
As far back as I can remember my career goals were directed towards becoming a registered nurse.
While other friends in the neighborhood played with dolls
I busied myself putting together models of human anatomy where all the body parts had to be painted
and placed inside an invisible man. While others read Nancy Drew mysteries I preferred
Cherry Ames --student nurse!
(Yes there really was such a series of books!).
More about me
I think personal stories are always more interesting than boring academic credentials but
if you would like to view my
curriculum vitae here it is.
Of all the letters after my name, the two letters that stand for Registered Nurse are the ones I am most proud of!
My dream to become a registered nurse has been realized and I consider it a privilege to be a member of the nursing profession.
So you can believe me when I say that I understand what it is like to dream of a nursing career.
When I finished high school I went straight on to complete my undergraduate education in nursing.
At that time there were not as many options open to women to complete an education once husbands and
families were established and I wanted to make sure that nothing interrupted the pursuit of my dream of
becoming a nurse!
A nursing career in Canada has changed a great deal since I fulfilled my dream.
Patient nurse ratios have decreased dramatically but then patients are much more acutely ill now when in hospital.
Technology, system complexity, and the rising expectations of the Canadian public have made the job of a registered nurse
more challenging and more complex than ever before.
A registered nurse in Canada is an important member of the health care team. The nursing profession is highly
respected in the Canadian society. Nurses have worked hard to establish themselves as a respectable profession
and have contributed a great deal to the improvement of the health of Canadians.
I am very proud that I was able to become a nurse but I am equally proud to be Canadian. The values that Canada is based on are the same values
held by the nursing profession so it is easy to like this country!
I am not alone in my thinking that
Canada is a great country to live in. The United Nations ranks Canada among the top four countries for its Human Development Index.
This is a composite measure of three dimensions of human development:
living a long and healthy life (measured by life expectancy)
being educated (measured by adult literacy and enrolment at the primary, secondary and tertiary level)
having a decent standard of living (measured by purchasing power parity, PPP, income).
Beverly Hansen OMalley, Registered Nurse.....it has a nice ring to it don't you think?
I was fortunate that I was able to make my dream of becoming a nurse in Canada come true. You can too!
